What To Expect with Music Con Brio

Engaging Lesson Plans to Inspire Your Inner Musician

Students of all ages learn best when their mind, body, and imagination are all engaged. At Music Con Brio, we go beyond the typical scales and sight reading you may have encountered in piano lessons as a child, to create lesson plans that feel inspiring and tap into your natural curiosity.

Our private lesson curriculum is carefully crafted to create well-rounded musicians and help students develop the tools they need to enjoy piano for the rest of their lives.

We emphasize skill development over pressure to move at a specific pace, tailoring each lesson plan to the needs of the individual.

In addition to the fundamentals of how to play and read music, we may also explore:

- Physical gestures needed to play efficiently
- Ways to use sound to communicate stories, pictures, and feelings
- The why behind the music: understanding the theory of how music is composed and why sounds fit together
- Effective strategies for home practice
- Music history
- The basics of chord structure and playing from lead sheets

Frequently Asked Questions

What's your availability for lessons?

Adult lessons utilizing the flexible punch card system are scheduled in the mornings, early afternoon, and occasionally and after 7pm at night. Because adult students often need more flexibility than school age children, exact availability may vary. Feel free to reach out with questions about specific days/times.

What if I need to miss a week?

Adult lessons are on a flexible, punch-card system. You’ll have 8 weeks to schedule 6 lessons, so if you need to miss a week here and there, no problem. You can also schedule multiple lessons in one week if you want!

Do I need to know how to read music?

Nope, that’s what we’re here for! We’ll guide you through the process of learning to read music using a step-by-step, carefully sequenced system.

How long does it take to learn a new song?

That depends on what song it is and how much time you spend in practice! Shorter beginning pieces may only take us a week or two. Longer, more complex classical and pop songs you hear on the radio involve lots of new skill development along the way, so those tend to be much longer term projects.

I want to play [Billy Joel/The Beatles/Chopin]. How long will that take?

We’ve all seen those little kids playing big fancy things on YouTube, or listened to a favorite radio song and thought “it would be really cool if I could do that!” And you can! Maybe. You have to be willing to put in the work, stick with it for a long time, and most important, you be patient with yourself as you start from scratch learning a new skill.

In our experience, adults can often progress more quickly than children. An adult brain comes fully wired to process abstract concepts, and you’ve already got the life experience to understand how to break hard concepts into small pieces and stick with it through moments of tedium and frustration.

But- you have to remember that those 10 year olds you see online have likely been practicing an hour a day for 5-6 years to get to where they are. Even with a fully wired adult brain, it’s going to take your fingers some time to catch up to that level.

If you have a particular piece you’ve been dreaming of playing, let’s talk together about what skills you need to get there, and how to make a game plan to make it happen! Just remember it will likely take more time and more practice than you think it’s going to.

What tech do I need for online lessons?

  • Fast internet connection. We recommend a minimum of 5 mbps upload/download speed. If you're not sure about your speed, you can check at www.speedtest.net.

  • Fully charged device with the zoom app installed and both mic and webcam enabled- we recommend going with whatever device has recently updated software and the largest possible screen so you can see clearly.

  • Wired internet connection if possible- this tends to be faster and more reliable than wifi, so if you’re able to plug your device into an ethernet cable, that will help us better see and hear your playing

And that’s it! You can get really fancy with extra webcams and headphones and external mics if you want to, but as long as you’ve got the basics outlined above, you’re good to go!

    Can we do in-person lessons?

Yes! in-person lessons take place at our studio in downtown Washougal

  • Do I have to start with children’s songs and learn like a little kid?

Only if you want to! We teach adult beginners using curriculum and materials specifically designed for adults. Pacing, song selection, and layout is all arranged with your needs in mind. If you’ve always wanted to learn Hot Cross Buns and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, we’re happy to make that happen though!

Do I need an instrument at home?

Yes! You’ll need either an acoustic piano or a full sized, 88 key digital piano with touch sensitive, weighted keys and a pedal attachment. You’ll also want to make sure you’ve got a bench or chair to sit on. We’ll help you get set up at the right height at your first lesson.

Do I need to practice during the week?

Yes! There are so many new skills to develop in the early years of piano study- physical movement, small motor skills, hand/eye/ear coordination, not to mention sorting out which note is where on the piano. If you spend only spend 30 minutes in your lesson once a week, it’s going to take a LOOOONG time to master all those skills.

How much do I need to practice?

To get the most out of your lessons, we recommend planning for at least 20 minutes of practice, at least 5 times throughout the week. Don’t worry- we’ll give you all the tools you need to understand how to practice and what to do during that time!

To avoid procrastination, we recommend scheduling piano practice into your daily routine, just as you would for eating lunch, working out, or doing chores around the house.

We know life gets busy though, so don’t worry if you miss a couple days here and there. We’re always happy to help you review and refresh your skills at your next lesson. The key is to jump right back in again and remember that even a few minutes is better than nothing on busy days!

    Do you offer online lessons?

Yes! We have dual camera setup that allows us to demonstrate side view, zoomed in hand placement, and overhead keyboard views. Our lessons were entirely online for over a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and many students loved that format so much that they ended up staying permanently online to work with us after moving out of state. We currently serve students in 6 different states and all four time zones of the US

How do I know if your teaching style will be a good fit for what I need? Can I try it out before committing?

Definitely! We offer a free trial lesson for all new students so you can get a feel for how we work.
